Vintage guitars for sale: Hofner bass

This is a nice Hofner copy of the Beatle Bass Paul used. We believe it to be a Univox or Teisco 1960's. Electronics all work however the tone just has a little static noise when you turn it volume works great and so does the tone other than that drop of static while turning (probably a very good electronics cleaning is in order). There are a few extra screw holes in the headstock some shown in pics. There is a ding on the fingerboard shown in pics at the 4th fret. Selling as is with the ... more

HISTORY:
The 500 / 1 bass was conceived in 1955 by Hofner Co. president Walter Hofner who believed a violin shaped bass would be easy to manufacturer along side of his existing double bass production line. It featured a symmetrical violin style design, was very light weight, had good playability and a was offered at a reasonable price. Surprisingly clean example of a '60s (or '70s?) Japanese viola bass. The action gets high as you go up the fretboard despite the saddles being bottomed out. Neck looks straight. I gave the truss a little turn in each direction but was wary of going too far. Not sure whether it needs a neck reset, shim, or to just have the bridge filed down. Frets are excellent. What I have here is a Hofner Fretless bass I purchased in1971 from a friend. I have had it on display hanging and intermittent playing.
It is a rare closeto original Hofner fretless model bass. Unconfirmed one of 100ish made in Blond / Naturaland only a few in a Fretless version. Most likely a custom ordered bass whichis even more rare.

Specs include a mahogany body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, block inlays, zero fret and a 23 fret fingerboard. It has open gear tuners, a black guard and a bolt-on neck. The scale length is 30" and the nut width is 1 11 / 16 " . It has dual Hofner blade pickups

Really good shape for it's age with minor wear electronics have been gone through and it's been setup. 30" scale length. One of the earliest basses to have a preamp and the sounds are very usable. Roy Estrada used to play one of these in the Mothers of Invention that Frank Zappa owned. All around an amazing find and a joy to play, no functional issues.... more

This is a 1968 Hofner 500 / 1 bass that has a mix of features from a 500 / 1 and a 5000 / 1 Deluxe. It was most likely a custom order. The color and style of wood, the tortoise shell pickguard, and tortoise shell control plate are consistent with a 5000 / 1 Deluxe. The rest of the bass has typical features of a 500 / 1.
