HISTORY:
The 500 / 1 bass was conceived in 1955 by Hofner Co. president Walter Hofner who believed a violin shaped bass would be easy to manufacturer along side of his existing double bass production line. It featured a symmetrical violin style design, was very light weight, had good playability and a was offered at a reasonable price. The 500 / 1 was unveiled in 1956 at the Frankfurt Music Fair however, ironically, was not made available in the UK until 1963 when it was imported for the ... more

What I have here is a Hofner Fretless bass I purchased in1971 from a friend. I have had it on display hanging and intermittent playing.
It is a rare closeto original Hofner fretless model bass. Unconfirmed one of 100ish made in Blond / Naturaland only a few in a Fretless version. Most likely a custom ordered bass whichis even more rare.

Awesome, ultra lively and resonant classic fully hollow German made Hofner. This guitar is in amazing condition for its age with only the usual light scratches and signs of wear. The small super lightweight (just over 4 lbs) hollow body combined with the original single coils can sound surprisingly thunderous with the right amp combo, I'd say kinda like a hollow Strat or Tele on steroids. This is a nice Hofner copy of the Beatle Bass Paul used. We believe it to be a Univox or Teisco 1960's. Electronics all work however the tone just has a little static noise when you turn it volume works great and so does the tone other than that drop of static while turning (probably a very good electronics cleaning is in order). Surprisingly clean example of a '60s (or '70s?) Japanese viola bass. The action gets high as you go up the fretboard despite the saddles being bottomed out. Neck looks straight. I gave the truss a little turn in each direction but was wary of going too far. Not sure whether it needs a neck reset, shim, or to just have the bridge filed down. Frets are excellent. For sale this very rare 1957 500 / 5 , with the oval tone plate . Both rosewood pickups have been rewound and it has a refret from an excellent luthier. Original pots which are date stamped . It is in very good condition for its considerable age and has its original winter case

1959 Hofner Committee, a relic! In very good cosmetic condition. I cannot comment on the electronics because it has not been played for many years and I do not have an amplifier. In original condition except for the addition of the Bigsby and the original pickups, which were replaced in the 1970s with more modern Hofner ones. This was the 40th Hofner Committee to be imported into the UK (serial number 2040) the body is pencil dated 20 10 1953. It has been confirmed as being either a late 1953 or early 1954 import.
Sadly this was part of my dad??s proud collection but unfortunately I??m a left halthough a tough decision, it would be a shame for me to keep it, especially as it is a very playable guitar with great action and tone. For 60 years of age it is in remarkable condition. There are some scratches, in fact quite a few all around the body. Cosmetic and with the nicely darkened laquer they give the instrnent this wonderfull patina. This rare Hofner guitar was made in Germany in the 1960s. There is no marking on the guitar, but I assume it is a model No. 161. Guitar is very light in weight ( 2 22kg or 4 15lb ) and body is hollow inside

Hofner Verithin made in Germany in the 60??s
It is completely original, and in great condition.
The only aesthetic details to mention are: a couple of blemishes here and there. One small hole apparently made intentionally in the back of the headstock, and two holes made in the pickguard for whatever reason. It would be like new if it wasn??t for these details.
All the electronics and parts work as they should, the action is medium low, and the neck is straight

This is an early President with the serial 5210 which dates it to 1959. It has the desirable blonde finish, original Compensator tailpiece , floating bridge and Celluloid scratchplate. The original machine heads are in very good condiition, can be a little stiff when compared to modern ytuners but still work well

1960 Hofner President. Not bad condition for a 66 year old guitar, a few small battle scars here and there. It had a floating Hofner pick up added pretty soon after it was first bought. I've just taken it off as the cable came apart on the make shift connection under the scratch guard, which I presume has lasted all that time. I've had it 37 years but don't really have the time to look after the old girl. Needs someone to give her a bit of TLC.
