HISTORY:
The 500 / 1 bass was conceived in 1955 by Hofner Co. president Walter Hofner who believed a violin shaped bass would be easy to manufacturer along side of his existing double bass production line. It featured a symmetrical violin style design, was very light weight, had good playability and a was offered at a reasonable price. This is a 1968 Hofner 500 / 1 bass that has a mix of features from a 500 / 1 and a 5000 / 1 Deluxe. Per the appraisal from Gruhn Guitars (see last pic), they estimate this to be from a limited run of maybe 10 basses. The color and style of wood as well as the pickguard are consistent with a 5000 / 1 Deluxe but the rest is consistent with a 500 / 1 including the white binding. A 5000 / 1 Deluxe has tortoiseshell binding. The original hard shell case is included

1967 all original Vintage Hofner Bass. POT is from '67 The 147 denotes either the made in the 14th week or some say take the 14 divide by 2 and it tells you the month. The 7 denotes the year. It's an authentic hofner potentiometer. Theres 972 etched in the bottom of feet board and is the number of guitar made that year in 1967, not the number of that particular model but number of total guitars that came out of the Hofner factory. Awesome, ultra lively and resonant classic fully hollow German made Hofner. This guitar is in amazing condition for its age with only the usual light scratches and signs of wear. The small super lightweight (just over 4 lbs) hollow body combined with the original single coils can sound surprisingly thunderous with the right amp combo, I'd say kinda like a hollow Strat or Tele on steroids. This is a nice Hofner copy of the Beatle Bass Paul used. We believe it to be a Univox or Teisco 1960's. Electronics all work however the tone just has a little static noise when you turn it volume works great and so does the tone other than that drop of static while turning (probably a very good electronics cleaning is in order). Surprisingly clean example of a '60s (or '70s?) Japanese viola bass. The action gets high as you go up the fretboard despite the saddles being bottomed out. Neck looks straight. I gave the truss a little turn in each direction but was wary of going too far. Not sure whether it needs a neck reset, shim, or to just have the bridge filed down. Frets are excellent. For 60 years of age it is in remarkable condition. There are some scratches, in fact quite a few all around the body. Cosmetic and with the nicely darkened laquer they give the instrnent this wonderfull patina. Rare vintage Höfner Colorama solid body guitar with one original 1960s Humbucker in the neck position. The guitar was refinished pink at some point before I had it. It??s been on a non-smoking studio wall for the last four years, with regular maintenance and care. The neck is one of the best and playing I?ve ever tried. This old Lady is in fantastic condition. I have had a new switch fitted, the fretboard has been cleaned and oiled and the strings changed.
This sounds absolutely fantastic with an unmistakable sound.
There are of course marks, wear and tear as you would expect from a guitar of this age. But this only adds to the character.

At some point in its life a previous owner added a cheap Chinese bridge pickup and some electronics. When I got the guitar I made the best of it by replacing the pickup with a Bare Knuckle Blue 90 P90 pickup. I also replaced the cheap nasty knobs with some vintage bakelite knobs from a pre-war radio, I replaced the tuners with Kluson Deluxe strip tuners, I and added a tune-o-matic floating bridge
