Who'da thunk it? In the year 2010, the most desirable electric guitars for quality, unique sound and bang for the increasingly unstable buck would come from ...Gretsch? Yes, the perennial also ran of the 20th Century to Gibson and Fender has surpassed its compatriots in these latter days. Jimmmie Webster and Ray Butts really were looking into the future and were not, as some suspected, soon to be outdated electromagnetic eccentrics. The Gretsch Professional G6122-1958 Chet Atkins Country Gentleman Electric Guitar is, like most pro level Gretsches, better made than the originals, better sounding, thanks in part to TV Jones, and a fraction of the price one would pay for the vintage stock. It does well on rock, retro, ultramodern, R&B, country, jazz, country swing, rockabilly and fingerstyle ala Chet, and it never sounds boring or boilerplate, like some of the guitars from those aforementioned compatriots. The faux f-holes are a boon to Loudness: friend to all guitar players, enemy to the resentful drummers, bass players, singers and, especially, keyboard players we have to share a bandstand with... I own about 30 guitars, each of them a trophy in a lifelong pursuit of quality axes. All I play anymore are the Gretsches.Read full review
