I recently purchased a used G&L Tribute series L-2000 on eBay. I previously owned the USA version (also purchased used on eBay) and found it to be one of the most punchy basses I've ever played. The tone was very unique and it cuts through the mix like a crazy hybrid of a Ric and a P Bass on steroids. Playing with a pick sounded amazing. The neck was chunky but comfortable and the hardware was awesome. Unfortunately, it was the heaviest bass I've encountered. Picture a bubinga Warwick with a wenge neck and a pound of lead added to the body. If i played sitting down, it would literally put my leg to sleep. I recently saw a video review on Youtube of the tribute series poed by BassGuitarMag. What I heard in the video was really similar to my experience with the USA model so I watched some auctions for a while and managed to get a good deal on a used Tribute L-2000. It looks, feels and sounds much the same as the USA model I had. It has the same USA made pickups, the same preamp (unknown if that is imported or not) and an imported bridge that is pretty much indistinguishable from the USA version. The neck on mine has a semi-gloss finish which is different from the USA model but there are now models with a gloss or even tinted gloss neck now. The best part of all was the weight. It's around 8 pounds. This is due to the body being made of basswood vs. the USA models using dense ash (at least mine for as heck wasn't swamp ash!) Basswood isn't really known as a tone wood for basses but it works well in this configuration. The bass is a great value at the regular new street price at about half of the USA model. It's even better when you use eBay to get a deal on one!Read full review
After eyeing these basses for several months - I finally stepped up, pulled the trigger, or mouse click I guess, and bought the G&L Tribute L-2000. Those that know Bass know G&L and its story. This is the best bass I've played (and have been playing for over 20 yrs with various brands). The action is low and the neck is fast. There are so many available tones on this, if you play in bands that venture into different genres of music (say rock to blues for example) this is one stop shopping - Flip a switch, and you'll likely find the right sound for the tune you're doing. I don't use any pedals or effects when playing the G&L - I love the quality on its own. It is just that good. . . . plus it looks cool! (I know, that'll offend the purists, but image is important too!) I want this to be my last bass - that's how good I feel about this.Read full review
I bought this bass for use in my project studio. I needed a bass that would cover a lot of different sounds and textural feel. I have not been disappointed. It is extraordinarily easy to play and very versatile and I think you would be hard pressed to find better build quality for the money. The G&L is leagues better than the Fenders I've played in the same price range, and much higher. Great for Studio use, or intermediate players looking to move up to a serious instrument.
The bass was in near perfect condition and was delivered quickly. I had to get on line to understand the switches and their correlation to the knobs- but they are lined up in a logical manner and bottom line, i really like the bass! As a matter of fact, it has replaced my other basses as my main axe. It has a great sound that has growl when played hard and good tone all around. It has active, passive, parallel and series pick up options and more. The bass is put together well and is what i would call- 'Solid'. i am very pleased. I supposed the Tribute is supposed to be lower than GnL's high end line, but i can't see any short cuts. I like it!~
happy i bought it
