15 years ago I purchased the above instrument on eBay. It wha a wonderful action and tone. Reminded me of my father’s 1945 D-18 that I so much missed as I gave it to my nephew. I played it for my students and at a local “Live Cafe” as they call it here in South Korea. I really loved playing that guitar. It also had a wonderful smell that brought back memories on my father’s guitar. I recently donated it to my grand nephew who has started playing guitar at the intermediate level. This guitar never let me down and always gave out a wonderful tone that others r,asked to me, had a full rich quality. I have since gone to Seoul to purchase a replacement but still miss the Martin HD-28 that I passed on to the next generation. Yes these guitars improve with age. Always purchase the best you can afford and they will go on to provide enjoyment for many generations like my father’s 1945 D-18. This company is producing instruments that are better than ever. One cannot go wrong with a Martin 28 series instrument. The pictures actually show my 1998 Martin HD-28 purchased on eBay in 2008 but now with my grand nephew, the next generation. Read full review

THE D-28 WAS MADE BY MARTIN IN THE 30S BUT THE ORIGINAL DESIGN WAS DIFFERENT THAN TODAYS D-28. THE ORIGINAL HAD A 12 FRET NECK WHICH MEANS THE BODY WENT UP TO THE 12TH FRET .TODAY THEY ARE 14 FRET SO THE EARLY ONES HAD A LONGER BODY BY 2 FRETS AND THEY HAD A SLOTED HEADSTOCK. THE BRACING AND SOUND HOLE LOCATION WERE ALSO DIFFERENT. MARTIN DOES MAKE A VINTAGE COPY OF THE ORIGINAL PRE WAR MODELS. THE D-28 IS THE HOLEY GRAIL OF GUITARS AND IT HAS BEEN COPIED BY HUNDREDS OF MAKERS. THE HD-28 HAS HERRINGBONE BINDING AND SCALLOPED BRACEING. THE ORIGINAL D-28 ALSO HAD AN EBONY FINGERBOARD,BRAZILIAN ROSEWOOD AND ADORANDECK SPRUCE.THEY NOW HAVE ROSEWOOD FINGERBOARDS AND INDIAN ROSEWOOD .EVERY NEW GUITAR NEEDS TIME TO BREAK IN SO WHEN I AM NOT PLAYING IT I PLACE SPEAKERS IN FRONT OF IT AND PLAY MUSIC TO IT SO IT VIBRATES WHICH SPEEDS UP THE BREAKIN PROCESS. GET YOUR GUITAR SET UP BY A PRO AFTER YOU HAVE HAD IT FOR A FEW MONTHS. WAIT UNTIL YOU GET INTO A SEASON BEFORE YOU DO THE SET UP .DO NOT DO IT WILE THE SEASONS ARE CHANGING. iT CAN TAKE SEVERAL SETUPS TO GET IT JUST RIGHT.i LOWER THE SADDLE AND SHAPE IT TO MATCH THE ARCH IN THE FINGERBOARD.DO THE SAME THING WITH THE STRINGS AT THE NUT ONE AT A TIME. iF YOU GO TO FAR YOU HAVE TO FILL THE SLOT IN OR MAKE A NEW NUT. IF YOU GO SLOW YOU WILL NOT HAVE PROBLEMS. a D-28 MADE IN 1969 OR EARLIER IS MUCH MORE VALUABLE THAN A MORE RECENT ONE AS IT WAS MADE WITH BRAZILIAN ROSEWOOD.tHAT MAKES THE GUITAR WORTH UP TO 5 TIMES MORE VALUABLE.PRE WAR D-28 CAN GO FOR $50,000 AND UP. THE REASON IS NOTHING SOUNDS AS GOOD AS OLD BRAZILIAN ROSEWOOD.Read full review

I started playing guitar two years ago on a used Yamaha FG-450S that I bought at a pawn shop. That model is a fine instrument for a beginnner, but I felt ready to upgrade. As the standard against which other guitars are judged, a used Martin D-28 seemed a logical and a safe choice. My guitar teacher plays a 1967 D-28, which has a superb tone. The 1996 D-28 was a good buy and arrived in good condition. As advertised, it had been played a lot, showing some pick wear, and the setup was great. With some new light strings, it is as easy to play as my Yamaha, although a bit heavier. Having been played a lot, the tone is very mellow and it stays in tune, as did the Yamaha. It's a pleasure to pick up the Martin and hear it when I play it properly. That gives me even more incentive to practice.
