  • Was not setup at all

Setup was terrible. It sounded like it was at the bottom of a barrel I used a drum dial and it was all over the place at 70, 73 ,74 70 on the drum dial. One of the truss rod nuts was completely loose. My photos below showed what I adjusted them to and now it sounds very good with the help of a different bridge. I may tighten the drum to 90 to see how much brighter that makes it. Playablity is good. The neck shape is fast and action is not bad for this price range. My MIJ 1981 Ibanez gold mountain sounds like a mastertone (which is amazing but those years were very competitive for MIJ banjos) I guess I was expecting close to something like the Ibanez all maple Artist which is much like if not as good as an RB-250 I think the rolled brass hoop has an amazing amount to do with the overall tone - like I said it will make a great claw hammer style banjo. and that's why I really bought this one. Now that I had to fix a 750 dollar banjo that worth about 450.00 it sounds much better and I changed the bridge. The chrome hardware is bright, the tuners are accurate and tight. I was not crazy about the plastic veneer on the resonator made to look like burled walnut. The workmanship is good, But the set up as I said was horrible. An oil finish is not what I am used to but simplicity has it's gains. Walnut they say is different than Maple or Mahogany in over all tonal quality. Not better or worse just different. I think this one would make a great open back conversion. Walnut seems to lend to the lower registers or at least softer and pluckier. AS you know all banjos are each different and have many adjustable parts that's why setup is critical.. I think this one need new strings and a different bridge. A banjo player can pick up those tiny differences and every player finds something unique. I think the price point is a about $200.00 to high for what I am hearing but ask me in a week a two after I tweak it and I may say it was a bargain.
